Bb Instrument (treble clef) and Piano
Adagio from Chorale No.3 by Cesar Franck, arr. James Moule
Best suited to cornet or flugel but playable on any Bb pitch instrument. This is a haunting melody,
highly chromatic, excellent as a Slow Melody piece in a contest. Not technically
difficult but needs a mature player to bring out the pathos.
A new version was uploaded in 2021, doubling the note values, addressing problems of eligibility in Slow Melody contests.

Aeolian Harp Etude by Frederick Chopin
Greatly simplified version of this beautiful piece but the solo line is compatible with the original Op.25 No.1 etude, if the accompanist can play it!
Suitable for baritone or cornet. The expected rubato and nuanced dynamics are not evident in the MIDI file.
Demonstrates an extensive pitch range, making this more difficult than a glance would suggest.

Ballinderry Rhapsody by James Moule
Commissioned as a 21st birthday present for a very fine young euphonium player, this piece
is also suited to Bb cornet and baritone.
Based on an Irish folk tune, it soon
develops into a jig, punctuated by reflective moments. Gaelic harmonies are featured,
including deliberate consecutive fifths. Moderately difficult.

This version of the previous piece is in Eb concert pitch and has a g' as its
highest note.
Based on an Irish folk tune, it soon
develops into a jig, punctuated by reflective moments. Gaelic harmonies are featured,

2013 NSW Championships. Moderately difficult.

Solo version of quintet / quartet version of the same piece. Intermediate difficulty.

"Havanaise" (opening theme) by Camille Saint-Saens, arranged James Moule
Written for solo melody competitions, this piece is excellent for demonstrating good
tone over a wide range and is difficult because of that. Duration: 2' 10'.

"Little Grey Home in the West" by Hermann Lohr, arranged by James Moule

"Sweet is the Breath of Early Morn" by Samuel Reay, arranged by James Moule
Reay was an English composer of the late 19th Century, famous for part songs. Originally in four parts,
this version allows the 1st Cornet part of the quartet on this site to be played with piano accompaniment.
Nicely pitched for intermediate players and suitable for contests.

for contests. This was revised and transposed down one tone in April 2019.
Used by Zachary Sharples in winning Under 15 Soprano Cornet in the NSW Solo and

Slow melody for Eb Bass. This is taken from the quintet on this site but with piano accompaniment.
Bass clef readers can play from the piano score. Great novelty piece.

This piece was one of the earliest to be placed on this website. It was revised in a better scoring program
in 2016.
This is an exciting display piece for concert or contest. Solo parts are provided for Bb and Eb
instruments, as well as concert pitch for those who really like ledger lines.
Quite high for Bb instruments. Well pitched for tenor horn but the piece will lack power
on a tenor horn. Plenty of challenges.

Novelty piece, suitable for concerts and contests. Designed to be played by a very
young intermediate standard player. Sounds more difficult than it is. Two accompaniments are provided

Quite difficult on eupho because of sustained high notes. Tenor horn version is suitable
for juniors.

Famous song transposed to a civilised key for brass with a little variation added. Not difficult.

"La Reve" from Manon by Jules Massenet
Versions for baritone, tenor horn and trombone BC are provided, played with the same accompaniment.
Consequently, the Bb version has several very high notes. Even the Eb version covers a wide range
so these are excellent slow melody pieces for contests, as well as being wonderful concert pieces.
This famous aria comes from Act 2 of the opera. Soloists should listen to the many recordings on YouTube
in order to get the right mood.

Slow contemplative, hymn-like piece, suitable for slow melody contests. Fairly easy
for Bb instruments but tenor horn version is quite high.
