Originally a solo for euphonium, this piece exists on this site as a quartet and, now, a duet.
Two versions are provided, one for Bb instruments and one for Cornet and Eb Horn. Both parts require skill.

The difficulty with this apparently easy piece is to play with sensitivity throughout the range of the instrument.

"Capriccio Italienne" (excerpts) by Tchaikovski, arranged by James Moule
Written for two inexperienced players, this duet for Bb cornet and Eb horn is easy and is an
ideal length for junior contests.

"Cherry Ripe" by Charles Horn, arranged by James Moule
Three versions are provided. In C major CP, one for two Bb instruments (cornets), and one for Bb cornet
and Eb Horn. In F major, the version is for Eb Horn and Baritone. These are easy duets,
comfortably pitched so that they are playable by young musicians.

"Could a Man Be Secure?" by Starling Goodwin, arranged by James Moule
Starling Goodwin was a contemporary of Mozart and, like John Stanley, was a blind London organist.
This piece starts as a quirky mazurka with uneven meter, then changes to a fast running style.
The repeats should not be "carbon copies" and the cornet / baritone version here suggests how that can be achieved.
The original was probably unaccompanied. Scored here for two similar Bb instruments, probably cornets or baritones, or one of each.
Comfortably pitched and playable by young musicians. Excellent for contests.
Used by Zachary Sharples and Sam Wong to win Under 19 Duet at the 2019 Hunter Region Solos.

"Duet" from Cantata BWV 78 by J.S. Bach
Scored for two Bb instruments of the same pitch with accompaniment, this piece is suitable for contests and great fun.
High notes in the Primo part is the main difficulty. A version for Soprano cornet and
Bb cornet is now provided. A revision in May 2019 simplified the accompaniment and
corrected mistakes.
Used by Zachary Sharples and Alex Putra in winning Under 15 Duet
at the NSW State Solo and Party Championships in 2019.

Scored for Bb cornet and Eb (tenor) horn, this kammerduet from about 1700 was written
for a soprano and an alto.
This arrangement uses only the first two sections of the piece.
The range is comfortable for both players. This is suitable for contests for intermediate players.

Scored for two Bb instruments of the same pitch, preferably trombones. This famous duet
is suitable for concert or contest. As with the original, the thrill comes from
getting the high notes so, although the speed is comfortable, there are challenges.

This is an exciting piece, suitable for contests and concerts. This arrangement allows players to demonstrate

Gigue from Trio Sonata Op.2 No.4 by George Frederick Handel, arranged by James Moule
Although titled "Trio Sonatas", these pieces are actually violin duets with the keyboard accompaniment written as a figured bass.
This transcription lowers the pitch so that the parts are within the tessitura of brass instruments.
Scored for two cornets but suitable for two baritones.
Excellent for concerts and contests but requiring capable intermediate players.

"Gondoliers Duet" by Arthur Sullivan, transcribed by James Moule
Bb and Eb versions with Sullivan's piano accompaniment. Marco and Guiseppe's duet
from the first act of "The Gondoliers" should be played as fast as
the pianist can manage. Suitable for contests and great fun. Moderate difficulty.

"Gone Are the Days" by Stephen Foster, arranged by James Moule
This sentimental song is usually known as "Old Black Joe". It is set here for two Bb instuments,
probably two cornets or two baritones. Written for inexperienced junior players for contests, though
the upper part tests the range.

"Hare and the Tortoise, The" by James Moule
Scored for cornet and tuba. Written so that a young Bb tuba player could be part of a duo.
The duo, Rocky-Dimitri Holt and Stella Shin, played it to win Under 11 Duet at the Sydney Metropolitan Solo and
Ensemble Competition in 2021.
Follows the Aesop fable. (Spoiler alert: The tortoise wins.)

Bb and Eb versions with piano accompaniment. Written for Sean Hou (9) and Dean Hou (8),
hence the name, to play in Under 13 Duets
at the 2007 Sydney Metropolitan Band Branch championships in which they came 2nd.
Used by the winners of Under 13 Duet at the 2010 Metropolitan Championships in Sydney.
There is a cricket theme of a spin bowler using subtle variation, getting belted
but finally taking a wicket. Suitable for inexperienced players.

Nymphs and Shepherds by Henry Purcell, arranged by James Moule
This well-known song from Purcell's opera "The Libertine" is arranged here for Bb cornet
and Eb (tenor) horn with piano. It is pitched comfortably but there are some quick passages which
will be a challenge. Good for concerts and junior contests. Note that the original version was in
incorrect keys and was replaced in January 2019.
This piece was used by Anthony Arfanis (12) and Sarah Sharples (11) to win the Under 13 Duet event at the
2019 Sydney Metropolitan Solo and Ensembles Competition for St.George Brass Band. In June that year, they came second
in Under 15 Duet (to another St.George pair) using this piece in the NSW State Solo and Party Championships.
Later used by Harry Kane (11) and Sarah Sharples (11) to win Under 13 Duet at the Hunter Region Solos in 2019.

The Preludio has an uncomfortable range. The Allemande and Giga make
a nice pairing with a suitable length. Lots of fun to play. Moderately difficult.

Basically in ternary form with some variation in the repeated section. Some hints of "Rule Britannia" might be noticed.
