Featuring sliding chromatic harmony and counterpoint to a slow rock rhythm.

/ baritone plus snare available in Quartets section.
Concert pitch parts also provided. Improvised slow rock drum kit suggested.

Come, Fairest Nymph by Garrett Wesley
Trombone trio based on 18th Century glee by the 1st Earl of Mornington.
There are two contrasting sections. Not difficult.
Used by a St.George Brass team to win Under 15 Ensemble at the 2023 Sydney Metropolitan Solo and Ensemble Competition.

Contrapunctus VIII from "Die Kunst der Fuge" by J.S. Bach, arranged by James Moule
The absence of performance indications such as tempo, articulation, dynamics and phrasing suggests that Bach never expected these pieces to be played.
Set here for Bb Cornet, Eb Horn and four-valve Euphonium with extra parts provided for Part 2 (French Horn) and Part 3 in bass clef, this
is a fugue with three subjects and several counter-subjects. This is not an exact transcription.
The range of the parts makes it difficult and counting is critical, making this an excellent contest piece.

Contrapunctus XVI (Rectus) from "Die Kunst der Fuge" by J.S. Bach, arranged by James Moule
This is the first of a pair of "mirror" fugues, labelled "Rectus" and "Inversus".
Set for Soprano Cornet, Bb Cornet and four-valve Euphonium with extra parts provided for Part 1 (Bb Cornet) Part 2 (French Horn, Eb Horn) and Part 3 in bass clef, this
is a playful little fugue, preceding the two most profound pieces in the set.
The range of the parts makes it difficult and counting is critical, making this an excellent contest piece.

EBG-Bees by James Moule
Scored for Bb cornet, Eb tenor horn and euphonium, this piece is a little fugue based on the initials
of a friend of the composer for whom 2020 was a particularly tumultuous year. (It was enough to give her
the 'eebie-jeebies.) All turns out rosy in the end.
Being contrapuntal, accurate counting is essential and a wide range is exploited for each instrument.
Suitable for players of intermediate ability at junior contests.

Exenell by James Moule
Scored for Bb cornet and two trombones, this novelty piece is named with the initials
of the performers for whom it was written (Xavier, Nathan, Linley).
Good for learning the importance of dynamics and articulation. Suitable for players of limited experience at junior contests.

This transcription of the famous 16th Century madrigal is a rollicking piece with contrasting dynamics.

Scored for two Bb cornets and Eb bass, this short glee is suitable as a contest piece for intermediate players.

Scored for Eb Horn, Baritone and Euphonium with CP parts for the baritone and euphonium.

Fugue on a Theme by Rimsky-Korsakov from "Mocba Rock" by James Moule
The "theme" is from the 3rd movement of the Trombone Concerto. Two versions provided: one scored
for cornet, baritone and euphonium, the other with tenor horn for Part 2.
Revised slightly in a better scoring program in 2019. Not difficult.

Charming classical gavotte rondo that will be familiar to children learning violin.
Scored for cornet, Eb horn and euphonium / bass trombone.
Comfortably pitched though the cornet has some highish notes. Not difficult.

O Happy Fair; or The Loadstars by William Shield
This is an excellent contest or concert piece. It was written originally for two
sopranos and bass. Scored for three Bb cornets, with alternative baritone BC and
Eb horn parts provided for the third part.
Not difficult, though the top part has a few high notes. Two versions are provided.
The Bb CP versions sounds better.

A contemporary of Mozart, Storace was an important figure in English opera.

Comfortably pitched and suitable for junior contests.

Silence, The by Sergei Taneyev, arranged by James Moule
This trio for lower brass is highly chromatic. Scored for three trombones, the lowest part
is best played on a bass trombone (or euphonium), though a TC Trom 3 part is provided.
The 1st part has some high notes but the other parts are comfortable. Accurate counting is required.
Suitable for intermediate players who can pitch accurately.

This delightful piece of whimsy is scored here for two cornets and euphonium (or similar).

This charming little SAT choral piece sits well on brass. Scored for cornet,
Eb horn and euphonium, it is comfortably pitched for all players and stresses articulation.
Being fugal, attention to counting is important. Good contest piece for intermediate players.

Trio Sonata Op.2 No.3 - Allegro by George Frederick Handel, arranged by James Moule
Handel must have thought highly of this jaunty movement as he used it in other works, notably an organ concerto.
Scored for two cornets and Eb tuba, all parts accessing a significant range of their instrument. Suitably challenging and a fine piece for concert of contest.

TRIO SONATA Op.2 No.4 by George Frederick Handel, arranged by James Moule
Although titled "Trio Sonatas", these pieces are actually violin duets with the keyboard accompaniment written as a figured bass.
This transcription lowers the pitch so that the parts are within the tessitura of brass instruments.
Scored for two cornets and Eb tuba with an extra CP part for the bass.
Excellent for concerts and contests but requiring capable intermediate players.

1. Larghetto
Particularly beautiful slow movement, ending on a dominant chord, this requiring one of the movements below to complete the performance.

This vigorous dance is the most challenging of the three quick movements.

3. Allegro No.2
Three-voice fugue with challenges of all players.

4. Gigue
A rolling pastoral gigue in 12/8 time, probably the easiest of the three quick movements.

Short, bright piece, featuring a wide pitch range and an unrelenting run of semiquaver
passages in Part 2. Hence, the quartet version on this site that splits the part. Scored for cornet,

the horn part is most challenging. Duration: 50 seconds.

Youth of the Gloomy Brow by John Wall Callcott, arranged by James Moule
Callcott was a contemporary of Beethoven. This trio is set for lower brass but it works
well with two cornets and a tenor horn. The contrasting sections make it suitable for contests.
