Abelard by Dr. John Wall Callcott, arranged by James Moule
This famous glee was written for male voices. TWO versions are provided, one for the unusual combination
of tenor horn, two baritones and Eb bass, and the other for three trombones and bass.
Several contrasting sections demonstrate
sudden dynamic changes. Though comfortably pitched, this piece requires good understanding
between players so is probably better suited to adults. Good contest piece.
Used by St.George Brass to win Under 19 Quartets at the NSW State Solo and Party Championships in 2019.

Two movements from the Suite in F for harpsichord with adjustment for the range of brass instruments.
Set for two cornets, baritone and Eb tuba. The Adagio is straightforward. The Fugue is challenging, especially for 1st Cornet.

Another of those Handel anthems that rattle along, here scored for two cornets, euphonium and Eb tuba, based on the transcription for organ by WT Best.
Challenging because of its contrapunctal style but comfortably pitched. Good contest piece.

All Through the Night Traditional Welsh, arranged by James Moule
Three verse arrangement for cornet, Eb horn, baritone horn and Eb bass with a cornet 2
thrown in for those without a tenor horn. (Sounds better with the tenor horn.)
Easy except for one high section on tenor horn.

The Alps by Sergei Taneyev, arranged by James Moule
Set for two cornets, tenor horn and either euphonium (preferred) or bass trombone.
Slow chromatic section requiring accurate pitching following by lively march.
Comfortably pitched and suitable for junior groups.
Used by a St.George team to win Under 19 Ensemble at the 2023 Sydney Metropolitan Solo and Ensemble Competition.

Amen from "Messiah"by G.F. Handel, arranged by James Moule
Flexibly scored for two cornets, tenor horn and euphonium, this is not difficult but requires good counting skills. Soprano
cornet on Part 1 would aid player comfort but probably not tone. Good contest or concert item.

And the Glory of the Lord from "Messiah"by G.F. Handel, arr. James Moule
Handel used this piece at least twice, including as a chorus in "Messiah".
This arrangement for Bb cornet, Eb Horn, baritone and euphonium is comfortably pitched, though all players
get a chance to show their range.
Many solo / duet sections so confident players of at least intermediate standard are required.
Good contest or concert item. TC and BC parts supplied for Part 4.

Andante by Edward Francis Rimbault (1816-1876)
Set for two cornets, baritone and euphonium, this little piece is ideal for training
junior groups. TC and BC parts are supplied for the two lower parts and an alternative tenor horn part
for 2nd cornet is also supplied. This piece was used by St.George members in winning the Under 13
Ensemble section of the 2012 Metropolitan Championships.

Andante by SS Wesley, arranged by James Moule
Set for two cornets, euphonium and Eb Tuba, this organ piece by the famous hymn composer shows similarities with the music of his friend Mendelssohn.
TC and BC parts are supplied for the two lower parts. Everyone gets plenty to do, making this an excellent junior contest piece.

This is a delightful piece, excellent for concerts and contests.
Several solos and extensive articulation requirements make it suitable for reasonably able players.

A fine piece of counterpoint with dynamic contrasts.

"Awake, Aeolian Lyre" by John Danby, arranged by James Moule
This is a transcription of a prize glee, written in the late 18th century.
Contrasting sections with contrasting dynamics make it a good contest piece for intermediate players.
The best setting for this piece is Bb cornet, Eb horn, baritone and Eb Bass, but a cornet
part is provided for the 2nd part and a (very low) euphonium part is provided for the 4th part.
TC and BC parts are supplied for the two lower parts.

Lower brass quartet based on a glee, suitable for trombones and Eb tuba or similarly-pitched instruments.

The many halts, changes of tempo and changes of mood makes this an excellent contest piece for intermediate players.

Ballinderry Rhapsody Traditional, arranged by James Moule
Set for two cornets, flugel and baritone (or euphonium), this piece is available
on this site as a solo and as a full band piece.
This version was played by the St.George Brass team in 2014 in winning Juvenile Quartet at
the State Solo and Ensemble Championships.

Short, bright piece, featuring a wide pitch range for all instruments. Requires subtlety to bring out the spookiness.

Hymn-like aire in rondo form with rich harmony to show off group cohesion.

Dramatic piece with lots of changes of mood, varying articulations and breaks.
Fairly difficult and suitable for contests.

This novelty song recounts a hold-up by highwayman Dick Turpin.
Set for trombones and Eb tuba, it is an exciting piece that requires great confidence from the players.

A short, quirky piece based on a four-part song.

Alternating between triplets and duplets might challenge some players but, otherwise,
comfortably pitched and suitable for junior groups.

Brass Quartet, based on Trio Op.49 No.2 by Josef Rheinberger, arranged by James Moule
Short, bright piece, featuring a wide pitch range and an unrelenting run of semiquaver
passages in Part 2. Hence, this quartet version that splits the part.

Set to words of Goethe, this descriptive piece by a once-famous Englishman is set for cornet, horn, baritone and euphonium with several alternatives provided.
This is an excellent contest piece with two contrasting sections. Lots of articulation marks, dynamic changes and counterpoint.
Parts have manageable ranges. Suitable for intermediate players.

This short glee is set for trombone choir or three trombones and tuba. TC and BC parts are provided.
Comfortably pitched and useful for training groups in dynamics and articulation.

This is No.38 from"Canzoni da sonare a una, due, tre et quattro" by this very influential composer.
Set for Bb Cornet, Eb Horn, Baritone and Eb Tuba, this early baroque piece is good for training purposes. Also suitable for junior contests.

Set for soprano cornet, Bb cornet, flugel and baritone (or euphonium), this early baroque piece is available

Capriccio by G.B. Vitali
Scored for soprano cornet, Bb cornet, Eb horn and euphonium / baritone, this
piece from the middle Baroque is a strangely unbalanced work.
There is much variety of mood
and a nice demonstration of the range of each instrument. Good counting is essential,
as with most contrapuntal music.

This joyous little piece is a setting of the words of the Boar's Head Christmas carol.

"Cesar Franck Rock" by James Moule
What would result if Cesar Franck, one of the most conservative personalities
of art music, were to write a rock piece? Sliding chromatic harmonies, sonata form?
This is a transposed version of the trio of the same name, pitched more comfortably for cornets
and baritone with alternative Eb horn and concert pitch parts provided.
A suggested snare part is written out but a good kit drummer would do better improvising.

"Chase, The" by Edward German, arranged by James Moule
German's serious works have been almost forgotten.
This four-part hunting song is arranged for two Bb cornets, Eb horn / french horn / baritone and euphonium. BC parts are supplied for Parts 3 & 4.
Block harmony alternates with counterpoint. There is variety in dynamics and articulation.
Comfortably pitched and good as a junior contest piece.

Set to the words of Leigh Hunt, this is a fine piece featuring Macfarren's usual rich harmony.

Galop in ternary form with contrasting middle section.
The top part has some high notes but mostly devoid of challenges.

"Come, Live with Me" by William Sterndale Bennett
Set for two cornets, tenor horn and euphonium,(with French Horn and Part 4 BC parts kindly supplied by Stephen King of NY),this jaunty song is comfortably pitched but tricky for 1st Cornet.
Suitable for juniors. Nice concert or contest piece.

A fugue to demonstrate augmentation and diminution of the subject, plus a lot of other aspects of contrapuntal writing.

is the perhaps the most aggressive of the fugues in the set.
The range of the parts makes it difficult and counting is critical, making this an excellent contest piece.

Contrapunctus XVIII from "Die Kunst der Fuge" by J.S. Bach, completed by Sir Donald Tovey, arranged by James Moule
Numbered as XIX or XIV by some editors, this is the final fugue from "Art of the Fugue".
Left unfinished at Bach's death, the last fugue has been completed by many students over the years, those published being mostly still in copyright.
Set for two Bb cornets, Euphonium and Eb bass with BC part provided for Part 3, this is a test of concentration and endurance, testing the range of all players.

"Dost Thou Hear the Trees" by Fanny Mendelssohn (Hensel), arranged by James Moule
From her Op.3 set of part songs though written in the last year of her life, this pretty little piece in ternary form is typical of the time.
Scored here for Bb Cornet, another cornet or horn, baritone / trombone and either tuba, bass trombone or euphonium for the lowest part.
The range of all parts is comfortable but some jumps will test pitching ability.

Drinking Song by Julius Benedict, arranged by James Moule

This is a lively novelty piece. Four competent players required but not very difficult.

Emperor Variations by Joseph Haydn, arranged by James Moule
Haydn wrote the theme as an anthem for the Austrian Emperor. (It later became the German national anthem.)
Not one to waste a good tune, Haydn used it in his String Quartet No.76.
Arranged for two Bb cornets, tenor horn and euphonium,
this is almost a transcription of that movement, allowing for the range of brass instruments.
Four sensitive, experienced (adult) players required. The two lower parts have some high notes.

This Irish composer's setting of the song by from Shalespeare's "The Tempest" features bell tones and some interesting harmony.

"Gently Falls the Evening Shade" by Luca Marenzio, arranged by James Moule
This comes from the prolific composer of madrigals of the Italian late Renaissance.

Excellent contest piece for intermediate players.
A version for 3 trombones and bass was added in July 2019. This version is comfortably pitched for all players.

Gondoliers Selections by Arthur Sullivan, arranged by James Moule
Scored for the standard two Bb cornets, tenor horn, and euphonium (baritone), (with French Horn and Part 4 BC parts kindly supplied by Stephen King of NY),
the arrangement is based on the overture and opening number or the opera.
Written for junior players at State Championships, it is quite difficult and everyone gets some hard work.

This transcription of a part song by a late 19th century English composer is rather baroque in character.

unusual quartet plays the orchestral parts to accompany the keyboard part played
on an organ or, heaven forbid, a piano.
Not difficult except for some high notes.

This is a glee, one of several settings of the words of Shakespeare.

"Harlequin" by Francois Couperin, arr. James Moule
Scored for Eb cornet, 2 x Bb cornet and flugel (or another cornet), this
nostalgic little jazz piece follows the harmonic patterns of the original baroque
harpsichord piece. Moderate difficulty.

Public School to win Under 13 Ensembles at the 2015 Metropolitan Championships.

short glee is very comfortably pitched. Suitable for inexperienced players.
Different styles of playing are required and dynamic changes are central to a successful performance.

"Here in Cool Grot" by Garret Wesley, transcribed by James Moule
Flexi-set, scored for Bb cornet, either cornet of tenor horn on Part 2, tenor horn,
baritone or trombone on Part 3, and euphonium or bass trombone on Part 4.

4th valve or trigger (too high for tuba).

Written for a talented junior quartet, there are significant challenges for all players in this arrangement, though it looks more difficult than it actually is.

Usually titled "Prelude and Fugue in G Minor", this organ piece actually consists of a dazzling prelude, a contemplative fugue, an intermezzo, another prelude and a another fugue.
Written for a talented junior quartet, there are significant challenges for all players in this arrangement, though it looks more difficult than it actually is.

The final noble fugue (starting at Letter E) is suitable as a stand-alone piece (3'35").

This choral piece alternates solemn sections, in the style of Russian Orthodox chants, with flippant allegrettos.
Comfortably pitched but the difficulty lies in many changes of dynamics and time signature.
Chromatic sections require very accurate pitching which might be more of a challenge for young players.
Suitable for high-status contests. Note that this score was revised in 2020.
